Scenario:
1. go to a page that uses the 2-pane style UI (e.g. Operating Systems)
2. open an object on that page (e.g. click an OS)
3. observe that the browser URL does not reflect the object that is opened

This can be problematic for multiple reasons, such as:
- user cannot copy/paste the URL to share with others
- user cannot bookmark the page using the browser
- the UI cannot cross-link objects between pages

The first and last are the more important issues.
